چکیده

Community ecology is tasked with the considerable challenge of predicting the struc15 ture, and properties, of emerging ecosystems. It requires the ability to understand how andwhy 16 species interact, as this will allow the development of mechanism-based predictive models, and 17 1 . Here we argue that the current conceptualization of species interaction 2 networks is ill-suited for this task. Instead, we propose that future research must start to ac3 count for the intrinsic variability of species interactions, then scale up from here onto complex 4 networks. This can be accomplished simply by recognizing that there exists intra-specific vari5 ability, in traits or properties related to the establishment of species interactions. By shifting 6 the scale towards population-based processes, we show that this new approach will improve 7 our predictive ability and mechanistic understanding of how species interact over large spatial 8 or temporal scales. 9 2 . Modularity, pollination systems, and interaction turnover in plant-pollinator networks across space.

Mutualistic interaction networks have been shown to be structurally conserved over space and time while pairwise interactions show high variability. In such networks, modularity is the division of species into compartments, or modules, where species within modules share more interactions with each other than they do with species from other modules. Such a modular structure is common in mutualis...

Geographical variation in mutualistic networks: similarity, turnover and partner fidelity.

Although species and their interactions in unison represent biodiversity and all the ecological and evolutionary processes associated with life, biotic interactions have, contrary to species, rarely been integrated into the concepts of spatial β-diversity. Here, we examine β-diversity of ecological networks by using pollination networks sampled across the Canary Islands. We show that adjacent a...

The Symbiosis of Human and Semantic Technology Through the Lens of Actor-Network Theory

Background:  Semantic technologies (STs) have made machine reasoning possible by providing intelligent data management methods. This capability has created new forms of interaction between humans and STs, which is called "semantic interaction."  The increasing spread of this form of interaction in daily life reveals the need to identify the factors affecting it and introduce the requirements of...

Moving Beyond Neighborhood: Activity Spaces and Ecological Networks As Contexts for Youth Development.

Many scholars, policy analysts, and practitioners agree that neighborhoods are important contexts for urban youth. Yet, despite decades of research, our knowledge of why and how neighborhoods influence the day-to-day lives of youth is still emerging. Theories about neighborhood effects largely assume that neighborhoods operate to influence youth through exposure-based mechanisms. Extant theoret...
